Timing belt replacement is especially important on all “interference” engines. Interference refers to the ability of the pistons to contact the valves if the cam timing is not correct. All VW and Audi engines ’99 and newer and many others are interference engines. Timing belt failure on an interference engine will always result in bent valves at a minimum and possibly major cylinder head or piston damage to complete destruction of the engine. Repairs on a 5 valve per cylinder engine(1.8T, 2.8, 2.7T, 3.0, 4.2) with a crashed belt ranges from $2800 to over $6000. VW/ Audi factory recommended timing belt intervals are listed as 105K miles on most ’99 and newer cars. We however, recommend replacement at or before 90K miles as we have seen way to many cars with crashed engines before 105K.

When we quote you a price on replacement of your timing belt there is a lot more involved than just the belt. We always replace all rollers and tensioners, the water pump, and the cam and crank seals. On the 5V engines we also do the valve cover and chain tensioner gaskets which are prone to leaking. The reason behind this is that the failure of any rotating item the t-belt runs on will directly result in belt failure. Also, oil attacks rubber products swelling and weakening them so replacement of the seals and any gaskets which could leak and compromise the t-belt is required. We also usually replace the accessory drive belt and engine coolant. We frequently end up redoing timing belt jobs done at other shops, sometimes only 10K miles ago, because the water pump, rollers, or seals were not replaced and compromised the belt. It costs a little more to do it right the first time but a lot more to do it twice.
